Presented By:

Hello
Kent Barton
Founder

Ethereum’s thriving community — underpinned by a handful of widely-shared values — is arguably our greatest strength. But how can it successfully maintain these values while welcoming a diverse range of newcomers to the ecosystem? This talk will draw upon my own lessons in building and stewarding both real-life communities (Ethereum Denver and ETHDENVER) and DAOs (ShapeShift). Attendees will come away with real-life insights that can help them scale their own communities, as well as a useful framework for thinking about the ever-growing Ethereum ecosystem. Specifically, we'll cover: - How blockchain-based communities (both IRL and online) are new "civil societies" that can play an important role in countering ossified legacy institutions across the globe. - Ways in which we can use tools like DAO's, privacy tech, and decentralized ID to preserve/protect/promote Ethereum's foundational cypherpunk values as we scale exponentially. - The common ground between "opposing" groups (liberals vs libertarians, solarpunks vs. lunarpunks) – and how we can leverage these shared values to big a bigger, more vibrant community. - How legacy institutions seek to artificially divide humans against each other, and how Ethereum can do the exact opposite (unite humans) and attract more users/citizens through its unique coordination mechanisms. - Why grassroots organizing and thinking small/local is more important than ever – even as thousands and eventually millions join the community. - Lessons for community builders from the early days of Ethereum Denver. - What we got wrong (and right) and ShapeShift DAO with respect to community-building.

Many DAOs assume they can have one grants program and this one program will optimally fund everything they are looking to accomplish. In reality, different types of grant programs are better for funding different outcomes. Some are better for public goods vs private goods. Quadratic funding is great for sourcing new grants and involving the community. Delegated domain authority is great for doubling down on successful efforts. Why would we assume that one program could possibly sustain the needs of an entire ecosystem?

Presented By:

Hello

Frontrunning hacks is an up-and-coming application of MEV in security and, more specifically, hack prevention. In an industry that is hunted by billions of dollars in hacked funds, users need a system that they can safely use to manage their wealth, so more and more creative ideas are being suggested as a solution. Frontrunning hacks started organically, as MEV searchers generally front-run anything valuable via generalized frontrunning bots. With millions of funds secured and returned via these generalized frontrunning bots, services that offer specifically this benefit to protocols have started to appear. All of these are bound to become irrelevant, as the moment they become ubiquitous, hackers will choose to use private builders that will directly produce blocks that include malicious transactions. Even if block builders start cooperating with said services, we will see the creation of "back mem pools," builders that cater to hackers' needs and will include malicious transactions, no questions asked. These builders will be protocol-compliant, and the community can do nothing about it. In this talk, we will go through the current landscape, explore why these solutions become notorious (and how they work), and then describe the end-state and these black mem pools.

Currently, there Ethereum mempool requires a binary state for transaction validity in propagation, there is significant opportunity for improvement. As future work on Account Abstraction and "Intents" become more relevant, there are significant opportunities to improve the base p2p and consensus layer to make things more optimal, decentralized, and increase functionality/use-cases. A framework to think about the mempool will be presented, including transaction relay standardness, as well as other improvements.

Designing and building sufficient decentralization in web3 remains elusive. We identify some of the common structures and design choices that lead to this, including the perception of incompatibility between ideological and practical decentralization. We react to the current state of DAOs and their purported utility within the rapidly evolving web3 domain. This high entropy state has led to uncertainty amongst builders and web3 thought leaders about the primary role of the DAO, and about what principles one ought to focus on during the design and build phases. We then guide the audience through developing a framework for how to think about building DAOs using the first principles of decentralization.

Blockchain nodes and validators secure blockchains’ consensus. However, they provide no security guarantees to smart contracts operating on the blockchain. This is probably necessary on L1s, however, the architecture of rollups allows for doing more at the sequencer level. In this talk, we present our solution to the architectural and cryptographic challenge—a zero-knowledge rollup protocol implemented on top of the OP stack that brings security to the sequencer level.

The “superchain” is a popular go to market among Layer 2 ecosystems. The rough approach is: distribute free and open-source software for teams to construct rollups that will eventually be subject to rent extraction–whether through a canonical cross-chain bridge or otherwise. This is strongly opposed to the notion of Layer 2’s as true public goods with no rent-seeking intentions.

Onchain fees make it hard to onboard the next wave of users to crypto, especially as the market begins to heat up. That makes multichain a key narrative for 2024 and beyond, with EVM Layer-2s offering flexible fees and cross-chain opportunities - and bringing new users to Ethereum by proxy. Also, Account Abstraction could become the default choice where users define complex governance rules enforced by the Layer-2 consensus and anchored in the Ethereum Layer-1.

In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, the transition from Web2 to Web3 represents a monumental shift in how users interact with online platforms. However, this transition often comes with a steep learning curve and a barrier to entry for those accustomed to the user-friendly interfaces of Web2. The founders of Transak are at the forefront of addressing this challenge, aiming to bring the simplicity and ease of Web2's onboarding experience to the complex and often intimidating world of Web3. In their insightful talk, the Transak founders will delve into the intricacies of designing user-centric platforms in the Web3 ecosystem, emphasizing the need for intuitive interfaces that resonate with the broader public. They will explore innovative strategies to simplify the onboarding process, making it as seamless and straightforward as in Web2 environments. This approach is crucial for fostering wider adoption and understanding of Web3 technologies, including blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and decentralized applications (dApps). Drawing on their extensive experience in the field, the founders will share case studies and practical examples of successful Web2-like onboarding experiences in Web3. They will discuss the importance of user education, streamlined processes, and the integration of familiar elements from Web2 into Web3 platforms. By reducing complexity and demystifying the underlying technologies, they aim to bridge the gap between the tech-savvy and the average user, making Web3 accessible to all. Moreover, the talk will address the challenges and potential solutions in maintaining security and decentralization while offering a user-friendly experience. The founders will provide insights into the future of Web3, where user experience is not an afterthought but a fundamental component of design philosophy. This session is a must-attend for anyone interested in the future of the internet, where the boundary between Web2 and Web3 blurs, creating a harmonious, user-focused digital world.

Building communities in web3 is crucial but lack of tooling leads to half effective solutions. In order for mass adoption, communication forms need to become public goods as it serves as the glue that holds ecosystems together as well as serving individuals with ways to manage the vast amounts of information floating in the social and crypto spaces. Community Engagement: Messaging tools foster community building, connecting crypto enthusiasts globally and promoting collaboration. Information Hub: These tools provide real-time updates, news, and educational resources, essential for informed decision-making and onboarding newcomers. Transparency and Trust: Messaging platforms support transparent discussions, debates, and governance decisions, fostering trust within crypto communities. Accessibility and Inclusion: They promote economic inclusion by offering free or low-cost communication, ensuring broader participation in the crypto ecosystem. Resilience and Decentralization: Distributed messaging platforms enhance resilience against censorship and disruptions, aligning with crypto's decentralization principles.

Hello

This EIP was submitted as part of ETHOnline 2023 and was chosen as a winner. In this talk, I would explain the EIP at a basic level to showcase the power behind it. It adds 7 opcodes for decimal math operations on the EVM, namely +,-,*,/,exp,ln,sin, which enables users to write numerical code as conveniently as many devs do in languages like Python. These changes invite the vast worlds of mathematical finance, machine learning, science, digital art and any other that needs numerical coding. Imagine the value this can add to Ethereum. Do integrations, differential equations, optimizations, linear algebra, etc. at user chosen precision. We never want to clutter the opcode space. The talk will explain why these 7 are sufficient and necessary to cover all practical numerical code.

The merge, or in this context more aptly titled "the split" (since we have separated the CL and EL), enables developers to reuse production-ready components of the Eth1 stack (i.e. go-ethereum) and innovate at the consensus layer. We can utilize the Engine API to drive block production using different protocols such as PBFT, PoA or even PoW! In this presentation I will show how this is possible using Lighthouse, the Rust consensus client, as a library to interface with Geth and finalize blocks using Aura. We can also reuse the same (Eth2) encoding, storage and networking capabilities to reduce the initial development complexity. My dream would be to use this as basis for developing a toolkit similar to Substrate (now the Polkadot-SDK) for Ethereum developers to quickly get started with (L1) blockchain development using the EVM.

Moving funds on-chain isn't very scalable. While each payment is individually cheap, sending funds to 100 people, 100 times over a year, requires 10'000 transactions. I'll describe how using the Superfluid Protocol you can achieve the same with only 101 transactions, on-chain. I'll use simple examples to explain the main mechanisms and how they can be useful, without making it a technical talk.

As rollups and scaling solutions have matured, especially on top of Ethereum, they have enabled a new generation of apps and use cases to flourish. With faster speeds and lower costs they have unlocked greater adoption of blockchain. But L2 rollups are just the first piece of the puzzle; now the space is looking beyond this with an eye to true mass adoption. To unlock use cases in gaming, TradFi, digital ID, and many others, including bringing Web2 business to crypto, many teams in the Ethereum ecosystem are building modular blockchains, referred to in many different ways as Supernets, hyperchains, Layer 3, just to name a few. These have the potential to propel adoption to the next level as they allow limitless scaling of transactions, sub-cent/negligible transaction costs, and also a level of customization that large organizations such as Visa or Activision Blizzard will require if they are to build on top of Ethereum. The tech stacks allow that allow developers to build these custom blockchains to enable what will most likely define the next wave of adoption in the coming bull market.

Crypto still doesn’t have its killer app. During this bear market, a lot of teams have been building. A lot of infra has come out and scaling technologies such as Layer 2 solutions have significantly matured. But to reach a level of mass adoption for Ethereum to establish itself as the true global settlement layer of a new internet, we need apps that provide real-world utility and that can instantly tap into a large user base. There are very interesting use cases emerging outside the most common use case in finance. This panel would be a discussion on what real-world use cases are being built, the traction they’re getting and how they are approaching their product market fit and go-to-market strategy in very novel ways. The goals would be not so much to focus on technical details of their use cases but how they have approached a problem and used blockchain technology to solve it with the end user in mind including non crypto-native users.

Our vision is to overcome restriction and eliminate overexposure. We empower individuals to regain control over their own identity, by customizing exposure levels to different entities, by replacing PII (e.g. birth date) with claims (over 21), ensuring privacy, preventing profiling, discrimination and open equal opportunities with a second government issued legal identity.
